NFL Draft 2000: Draft Analysis

Round 1

1. Cleveland BrownsDE Courtney BrownPenn State
Ed's Projection: Courtney Brown
As expected, the Browns address some serious needs on defense.  Courtney Brown should make an immediate impact and provide some much needed help for the Browns pass rush.  A good pick esp. since the popular choice may have been Peter Warrick.Analysis by: E. O.

2. Washington Redskins LB LaVar Arrington

Penn State

Ed's Projection: Chris Samuels
It was no secret that the Redskins wanted Arrington. He is a big time playmaker and could have a huge impact this season for the Redskins. The skins definitely have a playmaker on defense in Arrington. He will be a welcome addition to a below average Redskin defense.Analysis by: E.O.

3. Washington Redskins OT Chris Samuels Alabama
Ed's Projection: LaVar Arrington
Samuels had an impressive combine workout which really boosted his stock enough to cause the Redskins to draft him at #3. The Redskins will use him to solidify their offensive line which is the foundation of their potent offense. No surprises in the draft yet and I think the Redskins made two solid picks.Analysis by: E.O.

4. Cincinnati Bengals WR Peter Warrick Florida St.
Ed's Projection: Peter Warrick
A talent like this couldn't fall much further in the draft. Warrick looks like a good pick for the Bengals. He'll provide a dangerous weapon for QB Akili Smith and also gives the Bengals some insurance should they continue to have problems with Carl Pickens. If they can come to terms with RB Corey Dillon the Bengals have the makings of a very solid offense with Smith, Warrick, Dillon, and Pickens.Analysis by: E.O.

5. Baltimore Ravens   RB Jamal Lewis Tennessee
Ed's Projection: Thomas Jones
Well, I figured a RB was a probable selection but I really didn't think it would be Jamal Lewis. Lewis has incredible potential and can be a game-breaker. His health is a major question and I'm surprised that he was selected this high. Give credit to the Ravens for taking a chance with him, but if he continues to be injured in the NFL they may second guess this decision.Analysis by: E.O.

6. Philadelphia Eagles DT Corey Simon Florida St.
Ed's Projection: Corey Simon
Well, the Eagles are happy that they got their man and survived a recent scare that Baltimore would trade down. After Simon showed that his shoulder was healthy a bunch of teams coveted him. This is a great pick if Simon stays healthy as he will complement speedy DE's Mamula and Douglas well. Simon's presence in the middle could be one of the final pieces of the puzzle for a young and talented Eagles defense.Analysis by: E.O.

7. Arizona Cardinals RB Thomas Jones Virginia
Ed's Projection: Shaun Alexander
Again, I figured the Cards would select a RB but I didn't expect it to be Jones. I thought that Alexander was a good fit for the Cardinals because of his pass catching skills. Most teams had Jones as the top rated running back so I guess the Cardinals are happy to have him. Jones is also a good recieving back and he has more speed than Alexander.Analysis by: E.O.

8. Pittsburg Steelers WR Plaxico Burress Michigan St.
Ed's Projection: Plaxico Burress
The Steelers should of used this pick to acquire Chad Pennington. The QB position is now still a question but with the addition of Plaxio Burress, Kordell Stewart will now have a big target to throw to. Now with the addition of Burress to go with last years rookie, Troy Edwards, their recieving core will have to be regarded as one of the better ones in the league. Analysis by: N.M.

9. Chicago Bears LB Brian Urlacher New Mexico
Ed's Projection: Brian Urlacher
I like this pick for the Bears. Their offense came around last year with Cade McNown partly at the controls. Urlacher is very athletic and can play all over the field and on both sides of the ball if needed. He will help the Bears defense tremendously, both physically and as a leader. He is a good fit for the Bears who could use him at either OLB or FS. Analysis by: E.O.

10. Baltimore Ravens WR Travis Taylor Florida
Ed's Projection: Travis Taylor
Taylor entered the NFL a year early and climbed up draft boards after a great bowl game against Michigan St. Baltimore is set dramatically improve their offense next season. Taylor paired up with Quadry Ismahil gives them excellent speed at reciever. Throw in TE Shannon Sharpe and earlier pick Jamal Lewis and the Ravens have some major weapons. I like what they have done so far. Analysis by: E.O.

11. New York Giants   RB Ron Dayne Wisconsin

Ed's Projection: Chris McIntosh
The Giants believe they now have a beast in the backfield with the addition of the Hesimen Trophey winner Ron Dayne. Dayne will be able to do just what a RB is supposed to, which is control the offense. Ron Dayne will be a bruiser up the middle and defenses will be worn out when he is just getting started. I think the Giants have one of the steals in this years draft and will not be sorry with their first round draft pick. Analysis by: N.M.

12. New York Jets DE Shaun Ellis Tennessee
Ed's Projection: Chad Pennington
The Jets decided to hold on to their top pick rather than trade up. Ellis was the top DE on most teams boards after Courtney Brown. I thought the DE pool was fairly deep in the first round and that the Jets could have gotten a quality DE with one of their later picks. I think they would have been better suited to go with Pennington or a WR to replace Keyshawn here and then grab Howard or Engelberger later. We shall see this season which approach would have been better. Analysis by: E.O.

13. New York Jets LB John Abraham South Carolina
Ed's Projection: Dez White
The Jets stay on defense here to my surprise. I really thought the Jets would offense with this pick in either Pennington or a WR. Abraham is a solid LB but I don't think he was the top LB on the board at this point. I had Abraham slotted early in the second round and not even in the first. Maybe that's why Parcels is making the real pick and I am just analizing it. Analysis by: E.O.

14. Green Bay Packers   TE Bubba Franks Miami
Ed's Projection: Shaun Ellis
With the possible loss of MArk Chumura, the Packers pick up the best Tight End in the draft. Bubba Franks will play a key role in Green Bay's offense with Farve and Levins. Bubba will expand the Packers offense and make it hard for defenses to match up with them. Analysis by: N.M.

15. Denver Broncos CB Deltha O'Neal California
Ed's Projection: Bubba Franks
The Broncos needed to replace CB Dale Carter who is likely to be suspended for the entire season. There is a weak CB class this year and I didn't predict Deltha to be selected in the first round. I think this was a reaction pick in that Denver had eyed TE Bubba Franks but Green Bay selected him first. Analysis by: E.O.

16. San Francisco 49ers LB Julian Peterson Michigan St.
Ed's Projection: Rob Morris
The 49ers looked outside instead of inside at LB for this pick. The 49ers have so many needs on defense it didn't matter which one they picked. I like Peterson. He is a ball hawk and a playmaker. I think he is an immidiate starter for San Francisco and will contribute a lot this year. A Solid pick. Analysis by: E.O.

17. Oakland Raiders K Sebastian Janikowski Florida St.
Ed's Projection: Deon Grant
Your guess is as good as mine. Analysis by: E.O.

18. New York Jets QB Chad Pennington Marshall
Ed's Projection: John Engelberger
I am suprised that he dropped this far into the draft. Chad will not be an immediate starter, but he will be the near future of the Jets. Chad will have time to develop and be looked at as how he dropped that far into the draft. Pennington will be viewed as one of the best picks from the 2000 draft and teams will wonder why they let him go. Analysis by: N.M.

19. Seattle Seahawks RB Shaun Alexander Alabama
Ed's Projection: Jerry Porter
For me this pick does not make much sense. They already have a running back with Ricky Watters and Shaun will not see as much time as he deserves as a rookie. Shaun will try to compete with Ricky when training camps begin, but he will have to have a tremendous camp to take over as the starting RB. Shaun will emerge as the top running back from the 2000 draft once he gets his chance to play. Analysis by: N.M.

20. Detroit Lions OT Stockar McDougle Oklahoma
Ed's Projection: Stockar McDougle
It's been a while since I predicted one right, but the Lions came through for me. Seattle stealing Shaun Alexander from the Lions was the best thing to happen to the Lions. I really like this pick. James Stewart is duriable and productive and the Lions didn't need Alexander. Stewart will be much more productive with a solid line to block for him. The Lions were saved from themselves and lucked out. Analysis by: E.O.

21. Kansas City Chiefs WR Sly Morris Jackson St.
Ed's Projection: Ron Dayne
The Chiefs were looking to pick up a RB here or possibly trade for Corey Dillon. Morris isn't a bad pick here but I don't think he will be a big contributor this year. I think he has the size and potential to become a 'goto' reciever in this league but he needs a year or two of solid coaching first. Analysis by: E.O.

22. Seattle Seahawks OT Chris McIntosh Wisconsin
Ed's Projection: Travis Claridge
McIntosh fell further than I expected and I think that is why Seattle selected him. He has good size and can probably help the Seahawks ground game. I think a WR would have been a little better pick here since they need to replace Galloway but McIntosh is a good value at this spot. Analysis by: E.O.

23. Carolina Panthers CB Rashard Anderson Jackson St.
Ed's Projection: Jamal Lewis
I haven't seen Anderson a whole lot and figured he would be a second round pick this year. I think this pick is a stretch considering the lack of depth at this position this year. Analysis by: E.O.

24. San Francisco 49ers CB Ahmed Plummer Ohio St.
Ed's Projection: Darren Howard
I like Plummer and thought he was the best CB available this year. I thought he was the only CB going to be taken in the first round. With so many needs the 49ers couldn't really go wrong here. Plummer is a step in the right direction. Analysis by: E.O.

25. Minnesota Vikings DT Chris Hovan Boston College
Ed's Projection: Ahmed Plummer
The Vikings had major secondary problems last year but with limited depth and three CB already off the board the try to help their defense along the line. Hovan is a very hard worker who is a similar player to John Randle, i.e. strong and quick. He could develop into an even better player due to his work ethic. Analysis by: E.O.

26. Buffalo Bills DE Erik Flowers Arizona St.
Ed's Projection: Marvel Smith
Flowers is a very quick DE who can get to the QB on every play. After watching Jevon Kearse scortched the Bills in the playoffs last year it seems they wanted a speed rusher of their own. Flowers could be a starter this year after the release of Bruce Smith. Analysis by: N.M.

27. New York Jets TE Anthony Becht West Virginia
Ed's Projection: Casey Coleman
Becht was the second best TE availble in the draft. He is big and can block but also has soft hands for a TE. He should be able to step in and give the Jets a recieving TE that they haven't had since Kyle Brady. I like Becht but the Jets failing to pick up a WR in the first round have left them a little thin at that position. Analysis by: E.O.

28. Indianapolis Colts LB Rob Morris BYU
Ed's Projection: Julian Peterson
Peterson didn't last this long but Morris is still a good pick. The Colts defense showed major improvements last year and Morris will help that trend continue. Between Morris, Bennett, and Mike Peterson the Colts have a good LB core. I like this pick and think Morris will fit in well with the Colts. Analysis by: E.O.

29. Jacksonville Jaguars WR R.J. Soward USC
Ed's Projection: Sly Morris
Soward is not a very big surprise to be taken in the first round, esp. by the Jaguars. He is the probably the fastest WR available along with Coles of Florida St. Jacksonville already has a great recieving duo in Smith and McCardell and bringing in the speedy Soward for a three reciever set with be tough for defenses to match up against. I like this pick and the options it gives the Jags already potent offense. Analysis by: E.O.

30. Tennessee Titans LB Keith Bulluck Syracuse
Ed's Projection: Keith Bulluck
I think Bulluck is a good fit for the Titans. He fell a little further than most people thought he would and the Titans stopped his slide. With the addition of Kearse last year at DE and now Bulluck at LB the Titans defense is getting younger and even more talented. A WR is a possibility in round 2. Analysis by: E.O.

31. St. Louis Rams RB Trung Canidate Arizona
Ed's Projection: Chris Hovan
This pick comes at some what of a suprise because the Ram's already have a running back with Marshall Faulk. Trung Canidate will be a good pick for the Rams because of his speed. He will fit into the Ram's offense and probably will work his way into it as soon as possible. Since his speed can make a big play with any touch of the ball, he will be feared when he enters the game. Analysis by: N.M.
