NFL Draft 2001: Top Prospects

3/05/2001

Defensive Tackles DE | DT | ILB | OLB | CB | S
Richard Seymour
Georgia 6'6" 295 lbs. 5.0
Tckls Sacks Tckls For Loss
208 10 25
Has very good size an speed combanation.  He is big and strong which allows him to stuff the run or collapse the pocket at any time.  He has a great burst off of the snap but tends to get high in his stance sometimes.  He never stops chasing the ball.  With the right coaching he will be a tremendous DT.
Gerald Warren (Jr.)
Florida 6'4" 310 lbs. 5.0
Tckls Sacks Tckls For Loss
155 7 27
He is very big and knows how to take up space and stop the run.  He will be an immediate impact to the team that drafts him.  He does not have great speed but he is quick to get to the ball first.  One concern is the effort he puts out, some people think he tends to slack off at times.  If he gives his hardest effort every time, he might be one of the top DT in the league.
Casey Hampton
Texas 6'1" 310 lbs. 5.1
Tckls Sacks Tckls For Loss
231 9 45
He is a short, stumpy run stuffer who has tremendous hustle.  He does a good job of getting off of blocks and getting penetration.  He is not an every down guy but when he is in, you know you can count on him to hold his ground.  He also has a great work ethic.
Marcus Stroud
Georgia 6'6" 300 lbs. 5.0
Tckls Sacks Tckls For Loss
136 6 7
Has great size like his teammate Seymour, but he does not use it to his strength.  He can control the line of scrimmage but he gets too high and does not play with the leverage that he has.  He is a pure bull rusher who does not have many finesse moves.  As of now he is a run stopper with an enormous amount of potential to be an all around player.  He also tends to take plays off at times. Had a poor showing for a DT of his size in the bench press at the combine.
Ennis Davis
USC 6'4" 300 lbs. 4.9
Tckls Sacks Tckls For Loss
146 17 36
Davis has great size and quickness and is very mobile for a guy his size.  He is a big, physical player who fights to get to the ball and can control the line of scrimmage.  He needs to get into better shape if he wants to be an impact player, he tends to wear down at the end of games.
Kris Kocurek
Texas Tech 6'4" 280 lbs. 5.0
Tckls Sacks Tckls For Loss
270 5.5 11
Defensive Ends DE | DT | ILB | OLB | CB | S
Justin Smith (Jr.)
Missouri 6'5" 275 lbs. 4.6
Tckls Sacks Tckls For Loss
259 23 53
Plays with great intensity for the game and gives his best effort each play.  He has very good nose for the ball and a great burst to get to the ball first.  He has good size, power and quickness for his size.  He is an outstanding outside pass rusher who plays a lot like Grant Winstrom.  Smith will need to work on stopping the run, but it won't be a problem for him.
Andre Carter
California 6'3" 260 lbs. 4.7
Tckls Sacks Tckls For Loss
172 29.5 54
Maybe the complete package with out great speed.  He never stops hustling and gives 110% each play.  With his lack of speed, he will not catch runners from behind, but he will get to the quarter back and running back when they are behind the line of scrimmage.  He has good moves to gain advantage over offensive linemen.  His only weakness is his speed, if not for that, he might be the top prospect.
Jamal Reynolds
Florida St. 6'3" 255 lbs. 4.5
Tckls Sacks Tckls For Loss
169 23.5 33
He is a great athlete with very good speed and quickness.  He can chase down almost any player.  Reynolds is a tremendous pass rusher and rarely gets beat to the corner. He gets out of his stance very quick and takes advantage of it.  One concern with him is that he tends to get pushed off of the ball at the point of attack and he also has a tendency of tackling too high.
Aaron Schobel
TCU 6'3" 255 lbs. 4.8
Tckls Sacks Tckls For Loss
246 30.5 59.5
You know what you are getting when Schobel plays, he is very consistent and productive at rushing the quarterback.  He does not have any special or flashy moves, he just uses good old fashion hard nose football to dominate the offensive linemen and get into the backfield.  His knock on him is his size, he will have to bulk up some so he can be an all around player and play against the run as well as the pass.
Karon Riley
Minnesota 6'2" 250 lbs. 4.7
Tckls Sacks Tckls For Loss
155 31 45
Riley is a player who uses his quickness to get to the outside.  He is a great pass rusher with natural instincts to get to the ball, but he lacks size to stop the run.  He will have to gain some weight if he wants to be a well balanced player at the next level.
David Warren
Florida St. 6'5" 250 lbs. 4.6
Tckls Sacks Tckls For Loss

Inside Linebackers DE | DT | ILB | OLB | CB | S
Torrence Marshall
Oklahoma 6'2" 245 lbs. 4.6
Tckls Sacks Tckls For Loss INT
179 12 28 2
A great athlete with good speed.  He has good size and a knack to get to the ball. He lacks strength for a guy his size, he tends to get pushed off of the ball at the point of attack.  He also tends to freelance more than read the play. He has all the right tools and skills to be a very good player at the next level.
Carlos Polk
Nebraska 6'2" 250 lbs. 4.7
Tckls Sacks Tckls For Loss INT
226 9.5 31 2
Has great size, speed and can take on blocks and shed them off.  Very quick for a player his size and is like a mad man when blitzing.  he attacks the holes with a reckless abandon.  He is a very solid tackler with power.  His main weakness is that he makes a read on some plays and then he will get out of position and not be there to make the play.
Kendre Bell
Georgia 6'1" 240 lbs. 4.6
Tckls Sacks Tckls For Loss INT
146 7 10 4
Is very quick and powerful.  Has great instincts for where the ball is going.  Chases down the ball wherever it is.  sometimes he plays like he is out of control.  Will need to learn how to stay in position.  He is a outstanding playmaker.  Will be a good player at the next level.
Edgerton Hartwell
Western Illinios 6'0" 240 lbs. 4.8
Tckls Sacks Tckls For Loss INT
488 11 25 2
Hard working player with love for the game.  Plays with great intensity and non-stop hustle.  Shows good movement and always seems to find the ball. Scouts only concern is about him playing against tougher competition than he did in college, and if he will still produce the same way he did in college.  He could be the best middle linebacker in the draft with the right coaching and defensive scheme.
Brandon Spoon
North Carolina 6'2" 245 lbs. 4.7
Tckls Sacks Tckls For Loss INT
360 9.5 28.5 0
Tremendous work ethic in weight room and in the film room.  Has good size but lacks quickness.  Plays with intensity and rarely makes a bad read on the play.  He can also blitz.  Biggest concern is his problem with his biceps. Could be a great addition if he stays healthy.
Zeke Moreno
USC 6'2" 240 lbs. 4.8
Tckls Sacks Tckls For Loss INT
285 12 33 5
Very good player who makes a lot of plays on the move and is a powerful tackler.  He lacks ideal strength and may tend to wear down late in games.  He has the ability to play all three linebacker positions and maybe best suited to play on the outside in the NFL.
Outside Linebackers DE | DT | ILB | OLB | CB | S
Dan Morgan
Miami 6'3" 230 lbs. 4.6
Tckls Sacks Tckls For Loss INT
530 14 44 2
All-time leading tackler at Miami. Morgan is very quick and rarely misses a tackle.  He lacks the typical size for a linebacker, but makes up for it in effort.  He has a knack to find the ball and when to blitz and hit the holes.  He will be a tremendous addition for a team that is struggling with their defense.
Quenton Carver
Arkansas 6'5" 230 lbs. 4.7
Tckls Sacks Tckls For Loss INT
239 5.5 30 1
Probably one of the best tacklers in the draft.  Has good size, speed, and power to be a dominating outside linebacker.  Reacts quick and covers a lot of ground.  Should be able to play right away, but will only get better with time.
Tommy Polley
Florida St. 6'4" 230 lbs. 4.6
Tckls Sacks Tckls For Loss INT
289 7 19 2
Polley is a great athlete who reminds me of Jevon Kearse, except for the fact that he does not play defensive end.  He has excellent ability to chase down players and make big tackles at any time in the game.  He is very quick and is an excellent pass rusher.  One weakness is that he lacks size and can be pushed off by linemen.  He needs to bulk up and get stronger. If he does get bigger, he might be the best player at this position in the draft.
Markus Steele
USC 6'3" 225 lbs. 4.5
Tckls Sacks Tckls For Loss INT
341 25 66 4
Fast and athletic just as a linebacker should be.  Plays tough and is a complete outside linebacker.  He will need to improve his tackling skills if he wants to remain in he lineup at the next level.  He has all the right tools to be great but will have to focus on the mental aspect of the game.
Sedrick Hodge
North Carolina 6'4" 230 lbs. 4.5
Tckls Sacks Tckls For Loss INT
265 10.5 25 1
Has great speed and size.  Can chase down any player.  Plays well in coverage and also plays very physical.  He is a very athletic player but needs to work on skills to be a top linebacker in the NFL.
Brian Allen
Florida St. 6'2" 235 lbs. 4.7
Tckls Sacks Tckls For Loss INT
286 9 16 2
Very versatile, can play any linebacker position.  Has great speed and power.  Plays bigger than his size and is very strong.  Height is a concern and has to work on playing in coverage.  Will be a good player if put into the right defensive scheme.
Cornerbacks DE | DT | ILB | OLB | CB | S
Fred Smoot
Mississippi St. 5'11" 175 lbs. 4.4
Tckls INT Pass. Def.
269 23 46
Talks a lot of trash but has everything to back it up.  A great athlete with exceptional coverage skills.  He lacks strength but it is not a problem for him.  He takes chances because of his tremendous closing speed.  Does not let bad plays stay with him, forgets about them and moves on.  One concern is that he does not like to get involved in the run.  Another concern is whether or not he is coachable.
Jamar Fletcher (Jr.)
Wiscosin 5'10" 180 lbs. 4.4
Tckls INT Pass. Def.
123 20 41
Would easily be the number one corner in the draft if he was a little bit taller.  He is the complete package: fast, confident and very aggressive.  He plays bigger than his size and will do what he can against the run.  He is a natural play maker who does not let his size lessen his playing ability. the biggest concern for scouts is whether or not he will be able to cover the bigger and stronger receivers.
Gary Baxter
Baylor 6'1" 200 lbs. 4.5
Tckls INT Pass. Def.
202 6 44
Played a lot of cornerback in college but I think he will be moved to safety in the NFL. Has ideal size and strength for a NFL safety who likes to tackle.  He has good coverage skills and tremendous closing speed.  He is a ball hawk who always gets to the ball.  Baxter will have to strengthen his run stopping skills to be a top safety at the next level, but he has all the right tools to succeed.
Nate Clements (Jr.)
Ohio St. 5'11" 190 lbs. 4.4
Tckls INT Pass. Def.
177 7 26
Has good size and speed for a corner.  He has great leaping ability and soft hands which make him a better player than others.  Only has a little above average coverage skills and needs to work on getting involved in the run.  His size and ball skills will help him get drafted with in the first three rounds.
Ken Lucas
Mississippi 6'0" 200 lbs. 4.4
Tckls INT Pass. Def.
85 7 33
Will Allen
Syracuse 5'10" 185 lbs. 4.3
Tckls INT Pass. Def.
142 4 38
Has rare speed.  He will have to work on his coverage skills along with all of the rest of the parts of the game to be a top cover man, but he is a very coachable player who is willing to learn.  Showed a lot of improvement from year to year and his speed will get him a higher draft position than where he should be picked.
Safties DE | DT | ILB | OLB | CB | S
Derrick Gibson
Florida St. 6'1" 210 lbs. 4.4
Tckls INT Pass. Def.
213 7 16
Can just about cover any player in the NFL and he can also stop the run at the line of scrimmage.  He is very quick and explosive to the ball.  Has great closing speed and is a solid tackler.  The only concern scouts have is his problems off of the field.  If he can stay out of trouble he will be a tremendous player.
Hakim Akbar (Jr.)
Washington 6'0" 195 lbs. 4.5
Tckls INT Pass. Def.
225 4 12
Big, physical force who can cover or stop the run.  May get too anxious at times and get out of position but he has great closing speed to help make up for some of his errors.  He has great ball skills and is always where he has to be to make the play.  He did not have good coaching in college so he has a lot to learn but that is only a bonus for a player with his talent.
Jarrod Cooper
Kansas St. 6'0" 215 lbs. 4.6
Tckls INT Pass. Def.
301 1 26
A natural athlete with good speed and is very aggressive.  Loves to make the big hit at the line at stop the run.  He will need to work on his coverage skills to be a top safety in the NFL.  He is like an extra linebacker on the field.  Some scouts are concerned about a previous hip injury preventing him from being able to turn well in coverage.
James Boyd
Penn State 5'11" 205 lbs. 4.6
Tckls INT Pass. Def.
234 6 25
Plays very aggressive and physical.  Hits very hard for his size.  Good ability for reading keys and deciding if it is a run or pass.  Lacks size for a safety but makes up for it with his hard work.  He always seems to be in the right position and rarely gets beat deep.  Will be a better NFL player than given credit for.
Adam Archuleta
Arizona St. 6'0" 205 lbs. 4.5
Tckls INT Pass. Def.
322 2 8
Played middle linebacker in college but will be moved to safety at the next level. Is very strong, fast and powerful.  Has great ability to stop the run, but lacks coverage skills since he was a linebacker in college.  Once he learns how to cover man-to-man he will be a great help for a team. He has a lot of skills and talent to work with to become a top player at the next level, it will just take some time.
Robert Carswell
Clemson 5'11" 220 lbs. 4.6
Tckls INT Pass. Def.
352 7 14
Has good combination of size and speed.  He has good field awareness and knows when to break on the ball.  He likes to punish receivers and running backs with big hits.  He plays more like a linebacker.  Very good at stopping the run but needs to get quicker so he can play in coverage better.
