The following players are players that we feel are under rated. That
is, the general opinion about these players is that they will not be first
round picks and maybe not even be drafted on the first day if even at all.
We believe, however, that these players will have an impact in the NFL at
some point in their career if not this year as a rookie.
Mike McMahon, QB
Rutgers
6'2"
255 lbs.
4.7
Athletic
QB with good size, speed, and a strong arm. Has some injury
questions about his shoulder. He is a very confident person which
some teams appear to be viewing as an attitude problem but
I think you need to play with confidence as a QB. Definitely has
potential to be a QB in the league but will need to be
given a chance. Look for McMahon to be a backup for a few years but
possibly could develop into a starting QB.
Travis Henry, RB
Tennessee
5'11"
225 lbs.
4.5
Inside
runner who seems to be discredited because he tends to be tackled
low easily and does not have world class speed. Henry is a hard
runner who was very productive at Tennessee averaging 5.6 yards per
carry. Took over for Jamal Lewis when he was injured and excelled in
his absence. Even after Lewis returned, Henry still remained the
starter for the most part. With Lewis' success last year
there is evidence that Henry should enjoy the same success next
year. Lewis is a better reciever out of the backfield but Henry can
work on that. Look for him to get some substantial playing time this
year if drafted by a team without a #1 back.
James Jackson, RB
Miami
5'10"
210 lbs.
4.5
Big play
back who didn't get the amount of consistent carries to accurately
judge his talent. Didn't perform at the All-Start games due to
injury. Strong runner who doesn't shy away from contact and is an
excellent receiver out of the backfield and a good blocker - all
qualities that Edgerring James had although he is no Edgerrin James.
Can be a return man and third down back. Look for Jackson to enter
the league as a 3rd down back and return man but he'll eventually
get a chance to play and he'll show he has feature back talent,
similar to how Tiki Barber's career started.
Alex Bannister, WR
Eastern Kentucky
6'5"
205 lbs.
4.4
Bannister has great size and speed. He is a raw
talent with great physical tools but as Plaxico Burress showed last
year, size alone will not make you a great WR in the
NFL. Bannister will take a year or two to develop but if
a team makes a solid investment in him he should have a breakout season
in a year or two. To the fantasy footballers out there,
keep your eye on him for the 2002 or 2003 season
perhaps.
Kenny Smith, DT
Alabama
6'3"
288 lbs.
4.9
Played well at the All-Star games. Versatile,
can also play DE. Had some previous injuries. Comes from
the same program as Cornelius Griffen of the Giants who had major
success as a rookie last year. Smith is a playmaker. He is not
oversized nor undersized for DL but trys to use his speed more
often then strength. Isn't a force on every down but he could
play a key role this year in a defensive line rotation especially if he
is drafted later by a team with an already solid
DL.
Keith Adams (Jr.), LB
Clemson
5'11"
220 lbs.
4.5
Entering
the draft a year early. Would have been a sure first rounder next
year and maybe even the top LB selected. Adams is undersized for a
LB, only 5'11", but he doesn't play that small. He is an active
playmaker who is all over the field. I hear the same remarks about
him that were said about Zack Thomas and look at him now. Adams is a
player, what he doesn't have in size he makes up for in heart,
talent, and instincts. He may not have a huge impact this season
since he is coming out a bit early but he'll be a really good player
in the NFL in a year or two.
