Not a great QB crop this year, only Pennington and Redman deserve first round consideration. Redman started the year ahead of Pennington, but Pennington's solid play as well as the Thundering Herd's good season has him atop most team's draft boards at QB. Neither one of these guys are going to be penciled in as the immediate starter for their respective teams this year. Drew Brees would have been the #1 QB had he chosen to leave school early this year.
There are no superstar running back prospects this year as we saw last year in Edgerin James and Ricky Williams. However, there is a lot of depth at RB. There potentially could be 4 or 5 RB's picked in the first round as well as some decent backs available later in the draft(Canidate, Prentice)
There is a lot of depth at receiver this year. The obvious top receiver in the draft is Florida State's Peter Warrick, closely followed by another potential top ten pick, Plaxico Burress. Once those two are gone, there will still be a group of decent first round receivers who could possibly win starting roles this year. There will also be some tremendous speed(Coles, Soward) and playmakers(Northcutt, Cavil) available in the second and third rounds. All of the above are likely first round selections except Soward, who should go early second. He is the fastest of all mentioned which could raise his stock.
The only real TE that is worth first round consideration is Miami's Bubba Franks. Franks might sneak into the top ten at #10, going to Denver as I predict. Becht could slip into the first round if a team goes out on a limb, but he is more likely to be a mid-second round pick. I just didn't want Bubba to be lonely.
Offensive line really isn't my specialty. I don't have the time to tape and analyze blocking after the games as a full-time scout can. But, here is what I think anyway: I see some huge lineman both in height and weight whose size alone should make them first or early second round picks. The top lineman of the group seems to be Alabama's Chris Samuels who put on a strength display at the combine.
Along the defensive line, Courtney Brown and Corey Simon are the top end and tackle, respectively. There also appears to be some more quality first round talent at this position and Boston College's Chris Hovan's stock is rising as a result of his combine workouts.
The linebacker position has a little bit of everything this year. A big time playmaker in Arrington, a few tweeners in Urlacher and Peterson, and some talented inside linebackers available in the late first/early second round. I think there is a good crop of linebackers this year, certainly enough to go around. It seems like there are more OLB's projected as first rounders, but there will be some very solid ILB available in rounds 2 and 3.
There is a very weak group of DB's available in this year's draft. Atop the list is S Deon Grant who could fall on draft due to questions about his tackling skills. After that it is anybody's guess. Ahmed Plummer and Deltha O'Neal are possible first round selections, and Virginia Tech Jr. Ike Charlton could sneak into the first round. Other than that, no DB's should get a look in the first round.
